Ep 2: What I Learned from Adam – A Story of Chronic Pain, Healing, and Progress
I recently had the chance to sit down with Adam Henry on the Back 2 Your Best Rehab Podcast.
Adam is a veteran who spent years living with persistent lower back pain. His story wasn’t just about injury—it was about identity, mindset, and the long road it takes to get back to living well. What struck me most was how open he was about the emotional toll chronic pain takes, and how determined he was to find his way forward.
Here are a few of the biggest lessons I took from our chat.
1. You Have to Find the Right Healer
Adam said something early in the conversation that stuck with me:
“You’ve got to find your healer.”
Not just someone who treats symptoms, but someone who listens, understands your goals, and works with you over the long haul. Recovery is never one-size-fits-all—and the right clinician can change everything.
2. Mental Health Is Part of the Rehab Picture
We often talk about muscles, joints, and movement—but chronic pain affects how you think, feel, and live day to day. Adam spoke about the frustration, the identity shift, and how pain filtered into every part of life. Addressing the mental side of recovery is just as important as the physical.
3. You Can’t Just Rest Your Way Out of It
“You can’t out-rest it—you’ve got to get to work.”
Adam’s words say it all. Once he started moving again—with a structured plan and the right support—things began to change. It wasn’t about pushing through pain. It was about moving smarter and rebuilding slowly.
4. Stress and Pain Go Hand-in-Hand
Stress was a major driver of Adam’s pain flares. Once he started learning ways to manage stress—through breathing, mindfulness, and lifestyle changes—his symptoms became more manageable. It's a good reminder that our bodies and minds are deeply connected.
5. Progress Is About Trust
Trust in your body. Trust in your team. Trust in the process. Adam’s story shows that setbacks don’t mean failure—they’re just part of the journey. Recovery takes time, but it’s worth it.
If you’re going through something similar—chronic pain, long-term injury, or feeling stuck—I encourage you to listen to Adam’s episode. And if you’re looking for guidance, our Back 2 Your Best Rehab Program is here to help.
